Lamborghini Releasing NFTs, Here is the Deetz

NFTs

So first and foremost, you wouldn’t expect such a high-end brand of automotive engineering as Lamborghini to get involved with something that seems like a meme gimmick like NFTs or ‘Non-fungible Tokens’, it would be like hearing that Porshe is suddenly accepting payment in Dogecoin. Yet, here we are, and Lamborghini is releasing a special set of NFTs that they’re calling “Space Keys”. The five space-themed images are examples of artwork that uses blockchain technology to assign an exclusive owner, and in this case, have a particularly unique physical component.

According to The Dupont Registry,

“The “Space Key” artwork can be accessed by a QR code, which is inscribed on a piece of carbon fiber. And the carbon fiber that has the QR code that has actually been in space. As part of a research project, the carbon fiber was sent to the ISS in 2019. While much about the Lamborghini Space Key NFTs is still unknown, like the auction house, auction date, the artist, and what the NFTs will look like, Lamborghini says that this information will be disclosed soon, and we have no doubt that it will be exciting.”

The auction for the out-of-this-world NFTs is planned at nft.lamborghini.com and is set to begin on February 1st at 4 PM CET and in the spirit of taking this sale “To the Moon” each will last precisely 75 hours and 50 minutes, “the exact time it took Apollo 11 to leave Earth and enter the moon’s orbit,” the company announced. CreativeBloq reports that the first NFT “created by artist Fabian Oefner, sees one of the famous sports cars deconstructed as it launches from the Earth’s atmosphere towards the moon.”

Lamborghini.com described the first image, “This is Lamborghini`s first NFT ever minted. The photograph shows an Aventador LP780-4 Ultimae, lifting off toward the stars. It is the first in a series of five separate NFTs that depict individual moments within seconds from each other as the car rises above the earth.

The image was created by capturing more than 1500 individual parts of the car at the factory in Sant`Agata Bolognese (ITA) . The element of the earth`s curvature was made by sending a weather balloon equipped with a camera to the edge of the stratosphere. Fabian Oefner then carefully assembled all of these images into a 600 Million pixel photograph, that shows a hyperrealistic moment in time, that never existed.

Actually This Is Really A Lamborghini Kind Of Thing To Do

The Verge‘s Andrew J. Hawkins made a really good point when he said, “In some respects, it’s the most Lamborghini thing ever to auction off a series of NFTs, given that it’s sports cars are some of the most sought after automotive bling for the nouveau riche crypto-traders and offsprings of sheikhs to show off on Instagram.”

Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, told The Verge in an interview,

“The NFT community is quite a young crowd and innovation oriented,”  “They have similar values or interests as Lamborghini as a company or the Lamborghini community in general. So it was a quite a logical link there.”

The ‘Lambo’ has always been about what’s new, chic, luxurious, and opulent. Let’s face it, nobody is buying a Lamborghini for practicality. In this case the new NFTs fit right in.
