Do you remember the infamous blockbuster movie The Matrix? If not, the story centers around Neo, the protagonist played by Keanu Reeves, who discovers that our society is living in a simulation many years from now. But is that our reality? One professor seems to think so.
Are we living in a simulated reality, just like the Matrix? It may sound far-fetched and completely unbelievable to some, but associate professor of physics at the University of Portsmouth Melvin Vopson claims that it may actually be true.
He has discovered evidence that suggests our universe is made up of bits of information and could even potentially be an advanced virtual world.
At its most basic level, Vopson’s law states that entropy – or disorder – in a system of information decreases rather than increases. This goes against conventional wisdom and even contradicts the second law of thermodynamics established back in 1856.
But why does this matter?
Well, it explains how information behaves within our universe and supports what has been dubbed as ‘the simulation theory’. Put simply: everything appears to evolve to an equilibrium state where information content is minimal – much like computer programming languages or coding.
This implies that we are not living in an objective reality but one created by advanced technology instead.
Symmetry plays a big part here: as Professor Vopson says, biological life presents some form of symmetry: solids and crystals have symmetries, laws of physics exhibit symmetry etc., all pointing towards nature’s inclination towards it. We also know that Elon Musk has thrown his weight behind this theory too – so there must be something to it.
Finally, Vopson argues that information should actually be considered the fifth state of matter after solid, liquid, gas and plasma; which again he believes supports his theory further still.
We can only speculate on whether or not we’re living inside a simulated reality hundreds (or even thousands) years from now – but what Professor Vopson proposes certainly warrants further investigation.
