For many years now, NASA has been warning us about the potential dangers of space, specifically our massive sun and its solar flares. Now, as the potential dangers become more and more possible, scientists have been hard at work trying to develop a warning system in case of a solar storm.

As we inch closer to the future, NASA has been hard at work developing an AI-powered warning system that could provide us with a 30-minute notice before a solar storm hits Earth. This advanced technology is called Dagger and its purpose is to predict when solar storms form by analyzing data from various satellites around the sun.

Solar storms refer to eruptions of electromagnetic radiation that occur in certain parts of the Sun’s atmosphere, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). These events involve the collision of accelerated charged particles (mainly electrons) with plasma medium.

A CME can cause a geomagnetic storm when it interacts with Earth’s magnetic field, which is defined as “a disturbance of Earth’s magnetosphere that occurs when there is a very efficient exchange of energy from the solar wind into the space environment surrounding Earth” according to NOAA.

In 1859, one of history’s most powerful solar storms occurred on September 1-2 and was so intense that it created strong auroral displays around the world. This event became known as The Carrington Event and had some severe repercussions; sparking and fire were seen in several telegraph systems due to this phenomenon.

To prevent something like this from happening again, scientists have been observing our sun for years now in order to better understand what causes these events and how they can be avoided or mitigated in case they ever happen again.

Through their research, NASA has developed Dagger – an artificial intelligence system designed to help us accurately predict when another major event might occur by gathering data from satellites including ACE, Wind, IMP-8, and Geotail.

While these powerful flares cannot reach far enough into our atmosphere to harm humans directly on Earth’s surface, they do have the potential to cause major blackouts along with other electricity related disruptions as well as creating beautiful aurora displays – also known as Northern Lights.

With Dagger’s help however it seems that scientists may finally be able to make some strides towards predicting (and maybe even preventing) these dangerous phenomena from affecting our electrical grids in potentially damaging ways.
