For many years now, people have debated on the topic of Atlantis and whether its existence rang true. After all, it has been called the “lost city” of Atlantis, so what proof could there possibly be, right?
Well, luckily we may have just found the evidence we needed to prove there’s a real-life Atlantis out there.
The lost city of Heracleion, known as Egypt’s version of Atlantis, has been discovered after sinking into the Mediterranean Sea more than 1,000 years ago. A team of French marine archaeologists led by Franck Goddio have now uncovered a variety of ‘precious’ treasures from the sunken city which include gold and silver jewelry, a Djed pillar-like symbol from Egyptian hieroglyphs made with blue stone lapis lazuli, as well as an eerie ceramic hand.
Heracleion was founded in 8th century BC and it became an obligatory port for vessels coming from the Greek world during the reign of Alexander the Great in 331 BC. This remarkable site sunk entirely into the depths of the Mediterranean around 8th century AD due to natural events such earthquakes and tsunamis. The remains are located under four miles (7 km) away from present day coastlines in Egypt.
In July, Mr Goddio’s team conducted excavation covering south canal where they found huge blocks collapsed due to cataclysmic event that happened around mid-second century BC – about 1000 years before entire city sank beneath sea level.
Some precious findings included silver ritual instruments, gold jewelry and fragile alabaster containers likely used for perfumes; two ritual dishes made out of silver; and a beautiful Djed crafted with semi-precious stone lapis lazuli – long prized for its intense blue coloring.
Other artifacts such as bronze ceramic objects including a pouring device shaped like a duck were also discovered at Greek sanctuary devoted to Aphrodite – ancient Greek goddess for sexual love and beauty – eastward from Amun temple.
Evidence suggests that Greeks who were allowed to trade or settle during Saïte dynasty (664–525 BC) had their own sanctuaries and gods represented by these artifacts. Weapons belonging to Greek mercenaries were also found nearby indicating presence within this region at that time frame.
Previous findings from Heracleion have already been displayed at British Museum in London including statues of pharaohs and deities found earlier by Mr Goddio himself back in 2000 when he rediscovered this lost city using geophysical prospecting technology which allows detection cavities buried under layers several metres thick beneath seafloor sediment surface.
