If you’re looking for one of the best spots to gaze at the gorgeous Northern Lights, then have we got a place for you. Welcome to Kielder Water & Forest Park, home to England’s largest forest.
This holiday park is home to England’s largest forest, surrounded by 27 miles of lake shoreline and features some of the darkest skies due its lack of light pollution, making it an ideal location for spotting the aurora borealis.
Awarded Gold Tier Dark Sky Park Status by the International Dark Skies Association in 2013, Kielder Water & Forest Park boasts something for everyone with outdoor activities such as walking, water-skiing and even horse riding available. Plus, there’s a man-made lake – Europe’s largest – that was created to meet a rise in water demand back in 1982.
Architect George Clark best known for his hit C4 show George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces and Old House, New Home has added an amazing place to stay in this holiday park.
Created by George along with legendary TV architect and designer William Hardie, The Sky Den is an accessible tree house perfect for star gazing where guests may also get lucky and catch sight of the aurora borealis.
Reviewers have been raving about their experiences at The Sky Den which includes two pods – one featuring a wood burner with views out onto the forest while another houses furniture which can be pulled from walls and built together so visitors can relax while enjoying nature’s beauty around them.
One guest wrote: “What a fantastic place! Beautiful setting, amazing place and stars!” And another said: “Cuddling up with all the family looking out onto stars is a memory we shall treasure forever.”
Bookings start from £215 per day however, if you’re looking for something longer term then there are also lodges available starting from £559 per week which offer stunning views of lakeside scenery or rolling forest hills.
For those looking for something more budget friendly then camping or caravanning facilities are available too with car parks costing just £5 per day until 3am giving you plenty of time to experience one of Europe’s darkest night skies.
Kielder Water & Forest Park also puts on its own festive events every year perfect for families looking for some extra Christmas cheer.
