The future of warfare is here. NATO utilized the AI powered drone, appropriately named the Terminator, during a recent training exercise to launch an inert Sting Ray torpedo from the sky.

This demonstration showcased the anti-submarine warfare capabilities of this powerful device and showed its potential for automated logistics, resupply, casualty evacuation and more. Here’s what you need to know about it.

The electric powered T-600 quadcopter has a payload capacity of 441 pounds and can reach speeds up to 87 miles per hour within a range of 50 miles. It is part of Malloy Aeronautics’ ‘T’ series of quadcopters designed to carry up to 600 pounds – however it does not have any metal endoskeleton like its namesake.

Instead, this drone is purely designed for military use in order to bring new capabilities to customers in areas such as automated logistics, resupply and casualty evacuation.

During last month’s REPMUS (Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Uncrewed Systems) exercise in Portugal involving 15 NATO partners plus Ireland and Sweden, BAE Systems demonstrated the incredible feat which saw a human controller fly the quadcopter strapped with an inert Sting Ray training variant anti-submarine torpedo from a dock over ocean before releasing it successfully into sea.

Neil Appleton, Head of Sustainable Electric Products at BAE Systems Air said: “It’s a fantastic achievement in our collaboration with Malloy and a sign of our joint ambitions to bring new capabilities to our customers.”

BAE systems plan on using this technology as foundation for their upgraded model, the entirely electric T 650 UAS which will be quickly reconfigurable for military, commercial or humanitarian use.

The goal is that this device will provide significant capabilities while also reducing environmental impact on armed forces globally.

The amazing thing about this demonstration is not only how far technology has come but also how much potential these machines have for making our lives easier while still preserving human life where possible.
