Buffalo Trace’s New Whiskey Collection is Worth a Nod

Known for being the longest continually operating distillery in America, Buffalo Trace has just announced its new annual, limited-edition release collection of whiskeys called The Prohibition Collection. This collection is meant to pay honor to and commemorate the 18th Amendment, which had prohibited most production, sale and transportation of alcohol in the United States.

However, there was one exception—if you had a medical prescription, you could purchase booze from certain distilleries given licenses to produce “medicinal” whiskey.

One such distillery was George T. Stagg Distillery in Frankfort, KY. Now known as Buffalo Trace Distillery, they are no strangers to releasing limited-edition bottles every year with an assortment of uncut and unfiltered whiskeys as old as 17 or 18 years.

The Prohibition Collection consists of five 375ml bottles inspired by their original packaging from the era. The back cartons feature a replica cut-out for doctors to apply prescriptions for medicinal whiskey.

All five bottles are housed together in a custom wooden display case that will be available with limited quantities shipping to select retailers, bars and restaurants across the United States starting October 2023 at a suggested retail price of $999.99.

Harlen Wheatley, Buffalo Trace Master Distiller said “We stand behind our motto ‘Honor Tradition Embrace Change’. Each of these brands disappeared slowly in the years after Prohibition but they were integral to our survival.” He went on to say “Without them, today there would be no Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare or Weller bourbons.”

The purpose behind honoring prohibition is twofold—to recognize how essential it became during this period for survival and secondly serve as a reminder that even though prohibition was challenging times endured by many Americans it still stands today as an important part of American history and culture that should not be forgotten about or taken lightly.

Though details have yet to be released there will be an upcoming tasting event dedicated exclusively to celebrating The Prohibition Collection. Stay tuned for more information on when this exciting event will take place.
