Teeling Whiskey Co. has announced to an eager world of true Irish usquebaugh enthusiasts that they will expand their Vintage Reserve Collection with a brand new 30-year-old-single-malt. This latest expression of Teeling spent some time aging in Teeling’s warehouses and before that in the Cooley distillery where it was originally hand-crafted. The 30-Year-Old is following the massively successful 24 and 28-year Teeling single malts.
According to Teeling Whiskey’s site,
“[T]his special release of some of the oldest Irish Single Malt in the world. Matured initially in Bourbon casks before being given an additional maturation in ex-Sauternes wine barrels, imparting a distinctly unique flavour. Limited to 4,000 bottles per batch and bottled at 46% with no chill filtration completing a whiskey of true character.”
Alex Chasko, Teeling’s Master Distiller told Forbes, “we have more Sauterne casks still filled with 1991 malt in the warehouse” so the 30-Year-Old single malt will likely be followed by even older expressions in the future. Per Chasko: “We have worked our way through a lot of this very special liquid through the various bottlings. Because of this we will be very selective in our releases in the future given how rare and limited our stock is.”
Teeling’s tasting notes tell us that the nose is a “Luxurious combination of fresh orchard fruits, roasted nuts and chocolate.” with a taste that is “Velvety smooth with real depth of peach and apricot, hints of citrus fruits are interwoven with a light touch of smoke and herbal woody notes.” and a finish that is “Long, lingering fruit notes with a distinctive mix of spicy oak and smoked sea salt.”
The Teeling Story: Bringing Whiskey Home
Teeling has branded themselves “the new generation of Dublin distillers”. Jack and Stephen Teeling, the latest in a long line of whiskey men dating back to 1782 and are intent to put their own mark on the Irish Whiskey world, to that end they opened up Teeling Whiskey Distillery in 2015 a short distance from where their ancestral family distillery once stood. They proudly proclaim that they are the first new distillery to open its doors in Dublin in 125 years.
By experimenting with carefully selected casks and 5 different wines these entrepreneurs of maturation have indeed made their mark by launching a whiskey label that in six short years has already won wide acclaim, marrying their deep distilling traditions with a new twist.
