Right when you thought you didn’t need another reason to indulge yourself and enjoy a fine bottle of Kentucky bourbon, oh, how wrong you were. Just before Christmas and in the Yuletide spirit you can STILL take advantage of as of this writing, the bourbon legends of Burks’ Distillery, the heirs to T. William “Bill” Samuels Sr. at Maker’s Mark have extended a groundbreaking offer to the bourbon-loving public. In order to encourage people to share their product with family this year and make sure a dram of Maker’s Mark is part of every celebration, the distiller is offering to cover airline bag-check fees if passengers pack a bottle of Maker’s Mark for their trip. They’re cheekily calling the offer “Whiskey Flights”.

Bourbon On Board To Bring Home For The Holidays

Under this program Maker’s Mark will reimburse travelers 21 and older, (duh) who pay an extra baggage fee, if they upload their receipt to the promotional website through New Years’ Eve 2021. They will reimburse up to $40 per traveler and have set aside a total of $50,000 which should be able to accommodate 1,250 travelers.

“As a family-led brand since our inception in 1953, we’ve always believed that the perfect holiday moment starts with you, your loved ones and a bottle of bourbon to share, and we wouldn’t want anything to get in the way of that quality time,” Rob Samuels, a whisky maker and the grandson of the founders at Maker’s Mark, said in a statement to TravelAndLeisure.

“We know you can’t bring a bottle of Maker’s Mark Bourbon in your carry-on luggage, so we’re encouraging folks to check a bag on their next holiday-bound flight so they can bring a little spirit home to share. We’ll pick up that pesky fee for some lucky travelers.”

Some airlines like Southwest do not charge a bag check fee, however, other carriers such as United, Delta, or American Airlines charge anywhere from $30-$35 per checked bag. But remember these bags still need to be screened and the Transportation Security Administration recommends against gift-wrapping in case packages need to be searched, suggesting rather that a gift bag or gift box be used.
