Though it’s rarely used nowadays, spare change may actually be worth more than just pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Of course, not all coins have the same value, but if you come across a rare one by chance, you might be a few thousand dollars richer.
Have you ever wondered what your spare change could be worth?
One coin collector has found an incredible penny back in 1957 that sold for a hefty sum. Shaun (@Blueridgesilverhound) is a TikToker and coin enthusiast who posts videos about rare coins and their value, recently sharing the news of this impressive find.
This particular penny is considered valuable due to its near perfect grade MS-67+. There are grades given to coins from one to 70, with 70 being typically seen as flawless – this specific wheat cent got such a high grade due it’s rarity coming out of the Philadelphia Mint at that time. It was also certified by Certified Acceptance Corporation (CAC), meaning it was checked for authenticity and quality, adding even more value to it.
Additionally, the penny had an RD grade (red) which means it still contains some of its original red coloring. The term ‘red penny’ can also refer to the state of the penny – usually referring to it being Mint State condition, which this one was indeed.
This particular type of penny was minted in 1909-1958 and designed by Victor D. Brenner, commemorating Abraham Lincoln’s birthday anniversary on the front side with two wheat strands on the backside.
It may be worthwhile checking your own spare change for any pennies or other coins as some can have great value if they are rare or have errors on them.
Not just pennies though; another nickel recently sold for $8,625 because of ‘war details’ inscribed on it according to The U.S Sun who spoke with a coin expert revealing some of the most valuable pieces auctioned off including ‘the big three’ selling for an astonishing $13million.
eBay is a great website to check if your own coins have any value; all you need do is search the full coin name then select “sold listings” before altering your search criteria to “highest values”.
So keep an eye out when perusing your spare change – you never know what kind of treasure might turn up.
