Home invasion is a terrifying situation to be in.  And here in current day America, it is more prevalent than ever.  For the last 2 years ever since the COVID pandemic began, crime has been steadily rising.  Property crime, violent crime, you name it, it’s up like a 16 year old pecker in a whore house.  When seconds count cops are minutes away.  This is why everyone should own a gun.

2 Cases from Kansas City

In this recent report from Kansas City, Missouri, we see 2 moms who are victims of home invasion.  Thankfully in these situations, neither where injured or even home during the break ins. However, from their trauma we can glean a lesson, or 2.  In the first scenario, Tiffany Davis’s home is burglarized with the perpetrators being recorded on the Ring security system cameras.  However, it seems she wasn’t aware of the invasion until her son told her that “mom, I think we’ve been robbed.”

Tiffany Davis, victim 1 of 2.

Ms. Davis

This leads me to a couple of observations.  Off the bat, she doesn’t have her security system armed.  If she did, as soon as one of the cameras detected motion, she would be alerted.  But she said her son informed her of the intrusion, not the Ring system.  The second observation was the perpetrators are wearing the latest fashion for criminals in this post COVID pandemic America, a surgical face mask to hide their face.  This is an easily deployable disguise for anyone who wants to literally get away with murder, or robbery in this case.

Carly Coleman, victim 2 of 2.

Mrs. Coleman

I’m the other scenario, wife and mother Carly Coleman who lived around the corner from Ms. Davis, was also burglarized.  Here, the ring camera also picked up the intruders, but the system was also not armed.  In this case, one burglar talked through the camera to the husband of the house while his accomplice went around the back and kicked the door in.  This home was also not occupied by it’s residents at time of intrusion.  The guys here matched the description of the suspects at Ms. Davis’s house and the police are investigating with no arrests to report.

COVID disguise

Surgical face masks are all the rage for today’s 2022 criminal. Thanks COVID!

Why no arrests? In the Coleman robbery and the Davis robbery both sets of suspects wore surgical masks and hid their identity.  This allowed for an easy daytime robbery with a great chance at getting away with it.  Also, in both cases no one was home during the day when the robberies occurred.  This is a common M.O. for home invaders as no one home is the preferred scenario.

And why is that?  That is because of the prevalent levels of gun ownership in this country.  If you illegally enter into someones home in almost every state in America, the homeowner has a legal right to shoot you dead.  Burglars want items to sell for cash on the black market, not a shootout with a trained gun wielding homeowner.  At the end of the news report, Carly Coleman says, “lock up and bear arms.”  Solid advice.

Daytime Threat

With a large portion of the country now working from home, the chance of a daytime home invasion with someone home is greatly increased.  This is why it is a good idea to own a home defense gun.  But simply acquiring a deadly tool is merely step one.  The next step is to train with that tool.

Training

With my firearms training company, Defensive Bravo, I train individuals and couples to utilize a pistol, carbine, or shotgun for defensive purposes.  I teach the skills and techniques that the professionals who utilize firearms every day use.  My formal training is borne from Marine Corps Special Operations Command fundamentals.  However, I am not a veteran, I’m merely a civilian who is out to defend in the best way possible.

There is a decades old argument that talks about which platform is best for home defense, and I plan on covering that in a future article.  But for now, let’s just go with the idea that any gun is better than no gun.  With the cost of firearms and ammunition increasing, the supply of both decreasing, and the demand sky rocketing, acquiring any gun is not cheap or easy.  It honestly doesn’t matter which tool you pick, as long as you train and can operate efficiently and effectively with that tool.

Tools in a Box

This principle is the beginnings of the “tools in a box” mindset that is necessary for one to be a conceptual shooter.  And what the hell is a conceptual shooter? That is someone who can operate in a fluid, real time environment, effectively.  Any environment.  Especially when the bullets start flying and people start dying.  If you can utilize any tool at your disposal to neutralize any threat with stone cold precision and professionalism, you have the best chance at survival.

Additional Countermeasures

But what about if you are not home?  Then what?  In that case it is time for an upgrade to your home security systems and use them.  In both cases, the Coleman’s and Davis’s did not have their security systems armed when the where away.  Therefore, they and authorities, where not informed of the intrusion in progress.  Thankfully they did have Ring systems, so we have video evidence.  But again, they hid their faces so hard to make a positive ID in court.

The armored door on a budget. The Coleman’s installed this after the robbery.

Another solution involves an armored door device.  Many are available on the market today, and some are damn near impenetrable.  Installing an armored door device on all exterior entry doors is a sound security solution.  If intruders can’t easily break the door down, they usually will move on.  Climbing in and out of a broken window is not the best way to move a TV out of a house.

Go big, or not.

However, you could go all out and rig your home up to be ready for the Purge.  You know, bullet proof shutters dropping down to cover the windows and other devices and systems to turn your home into one big ass panic room.  That would be the spare no expense solution.  But if you aren’t ready to drop tens of thousands on ultra advanced lock down security measures, I get it.  All you need is a simple Ring or SimpliSafe system, an armored door, and a trained homeowner with a firearm.  That combination is hard to beat.
