Being caught in an ambush is a horrible situation to be in. It is literally a trap made to kill everyone targeted. Carefully laid plans all culminate together to hurry you to your demise. In this triple shot of ambush videos, we will analyze the military side of an ambush.

Open Field Ambush
The first ambush is of a Marine patrol in Afghanistan. A fire team is on patrol when they begin receiving fire from multiple directions. The camera’s perspective is of the Marine machine gunner in the squad. His first priority is to determine the direction of incoming fire, which in this case is a couple of different directions. Our Marine determines a location of fire and lays down a series of bursts to suppress the enemy.

The gunner then notices that the dust kicking up from his weapons system is giving away his position. He makes his way to a small dirt mound and deploys his bi-pod mounted M240B to do some work. Once safely in the better firing position, he lets the enemy have it. This is how to defend against an ambush. Determine the direction of incoming fire, lay down suppressive fire, flank, and neutralize. Only proper training and mindset under fire can enable you to survive such an attack. Thankfully, our Marines have all of these qualities on lock.
Linear Convoy Ambush

In the next video, we see a better executed linear style ambush on an American humvee convoy. The camera perspective is of the .50 cal gunner. Here, the Taliban has chosen well concealed cover positions that are difficult for the Americans to find. The gunner lays down a few bursts to keep the enemies heads down, but it isn’t as effective as he would like. Near the end of the video, the convoy suffers an RPG slamming into the lead vehicle, halting the Americans. This is literally a worse case scenario for the ambushed soldiers. Now their train of Hummers is stalled out, with enemies engaging. Like the gunner says “Lets get the fuck outta here!”

This has been the most effective tactic of ambush that the Americans have had to endure in the Afghanistan and Iraq campaigns of the past 20+ years. When you have a well concealed and covered enemy that can stop the movement of your convoy by utilizing anti-armor weapons systems like an RPG, there is little you can do to defend against it. If you are caught out in the open, you’re dead. If you stop moving, you’re dead. Our military has spent the past 20 years coming up with tactics to counter this linear convoy ambush style. And that answer is generally, more armor, more firepower, and more training. Yet still, this is a highly effective tactic.
Executing an Ambush

And in the final installment of this article, we have a NSFW video from the Baloch Liberation Army, or BLA for short. The who and where? Balochistan is a province inside of Pakistan that has been fighting with Pakistan for over 20 years. Here, we see the BLA fighters ominously looking at 4 volunteers in the Pakistan’s Frontier Fighting Corps. On cue, everyone opens fire with iron sighted AK-47s and old SVD precision rifles. Fortunately for the targeted Pakistani’s, the accuracy of the weapons systems and the shooters are garbage. It takes a second, but once the Pakistani’s realize they are being ambushed they run for their lives.

A couple of the fighters are hit immediately and go down, marked by the red arrow in the video. A few more intelligently dive for cover and are safely out of sight. Yet one guy just has to engage the enemy. So he proceeds to pop his head up from the same spot a couple of times to locate the source of the incoming fire. This is why he dies. When under fire from a concealed cover position, the last thing you want to do is continually give away your position so the enemy can pinpoint a bullet to your head. And this is exactly what happens here. The tracers get closer and closer, then, headshot. We see what can be presumed as a piece of clothing or maybe the Pakistani’s scalp fly off to the left as he fires his rifle in the air and falls dead out of frame.
Deadly Lesson
Let this man’s death be a lesson to you. When under fire, don’t keep popping your head up at the same spot so the enemy can drop you. Move to differing cover and concealment positions. Realize that concealment is only hiding you from view, not protecting you from fire. And cover is a safe position that is bullet proof and also conceals you from view. The best idea for our dead guy would have been to do what the Marines in the first video did. Get cover and return suppressive fire. Not pop your head up over and over till they eventually kill you.
