At the Sotheby’s auction house in Dubai, the phrase “out of this world” is getting thrown around an awful lot when it comes to a new jewel… and they’re taking it quite literally. According to VOA News, the famed purveyors of all things luxurious announced that it will be offering a black diamond that they say is believed to have fallen to the Earth from Outer Space, an interplanetary diamond if you will.

The Auction Is On For An Otherworldly Stone

“Sotheby’s calls the large black diamond, “The Enigma.” It weighs 555.55 carats. A carat is a term of measurement for valuable stones often used in jewelry. One carat equals 200 milligrams.

The rare stone was shown to reporters at Sotheby’s on Monday. In February, it will be put up for sale at Sotheby’s in London.”

The British auctioneers expect that the stunningly rare stone will earn the seller at least $6.8 million. The experts with the National Science Foundation call this type of stone a “carbonado diamond”. The academics report that carbonado diamonds form during the violent explosions of supernovae.

According to the NSF, and Stephen Haggerty of Florida International University,

“Approximately 600 tons of conventional diamonds have been mined, traded, polished and adorned since 1900. “But not a single black/carbonado diamond has been discovered in the world’s mining fields,” Haggerty said.

The new data support earlier research by Haggerty showing that carbonado diamonds formed in stellar supernovae explosions. Black diamonds were once the size of asteroids, a kilometer or more in diameter when they first landed on Earth.”

The Fifty-Five Faceted 555.55 Carat Diamond for 5 Million Pounds

Sotheby’s jewelry specialist in Dubai, Sophie Stevens, told The Associated Press,

“The shape of the diamond is based on the Middle-Eastern palm symbol of the Khamsa, which stands for strength and it stands for protection,” she said. Khamsa in Arabic means five. The diamond has 55 facets.

“So there’s a nice theme of the number five running throughout the diamond,” she added.

“With the carbonado diamonds, we believe that they were formed through extraterrestrial origins, with meteorites colliding with the Earth and either forming chemical vapor disposition or indeed coming from the meteorites themselves,” she said.
