After HUGE Whiskey Shortage, Bars Are Now Doing The Unthinkable

Whiskey

You hate to see it. Bars in Missoula, Montana are running completely out of Jameson Whiskey! It’s one of those stories where you really wonder what Jon Belushi’s Bluto of Animal House fame would have to say…

Oh… wait… here it is…

But Why’s The Whiskey Gone?

In a peculiarity of the ongoing supply-chain shortages and hiccups that have been wrought upon the nation thanks to COVID19 lockdowns and closures there is hardly a single bottle of Jameson Irish Whiskey to be found at any of the bars in western Montana, and there hasn’t been for at least two months. That’s quite an impact for an area where the cowboy life and the shot’a whiskey after a hard day has been a way of life for almost two centuries. With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations coming up next month it’s bound to have an impact, especially in Butte, MT a town steeped in it’s Irish heritage.

“We only have two precious bottles left that we’ve been saving for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Lacey Clements, a bartender at Maloney’s, an Irish bar on Main Street according to The Missoulian. “It’ll be first-come, first-served. All of the liquor stores are out and they’ve told us any more bottles are still a month or so away.”

Clements isn’t the only one singing a woeful dirge either. James “Pops” Jones, of The Press Box bar and liquor store in Missoula, hasn’t seen a bottle in 45 days.

“We get all of our stuff from Grizzly Liquor, so whatever they’re out of we don’t get,” he said. “Grizzly Liquor gets their inventory from the state. I’ve heard there’s nothing coming in soon. There’s no light at the end of the tunnel. Some of the other bourbons have been out for six months.”

Jones told the Missoulian that he has other Irish Whiskeys like Tullamore D.E.W. (your writer’s favorite), but he typically sells about 10 to 12 bottles of Jameson per month.

“We usually go through a bottle of Jameson every other day, depending on the time of year,” Jones explained.

Fortunately for those of us outside of western Montana this problem seems to be a particularly isolated one, with some areas of the mountainous state and even Coeur d’Alene in neighboring Idaho able to get Jameson just fine.
